Wildfire emissions are an increasingly important source of aerosols in the Arctic atmosphere.

Previous studies have shown that wildfire smoke from boreal regions is regularly transported over long distances into the Arctic, occasionally producing exceptionally high aerosol concentrations at remote monitoring stations. At the Zeppelin Observatory in Svalbard, some of the strongest aerosol episodes have been associated with long-range transport of wildfire emissions. The extreme Canadian wildfire seasons of 2023 and 2025 provide recent examples, while fires in Siberia represent another important source region of Arctic aerosols.
In this presentation, we investigate the role of wildfires in controlling Arctic aerosol concentrations by combining long-term observations and satellite data with atmospheric transport modeling. We examine the frequency and magnitude of wildfire influence, the major source regions and transport pathways, and the conditions under which smoke reaches the high Arctic.
