Seabirds spend much of their lives at sea, making them valuable indicators of the health of our oceans. However, their behavior and distribution during the non-breeding season is poorly understood. To fill this knowledge gap and provide information to develop effective conservation strategies, we tracked a seabird species in the Southern Ocean, the snow petrel, over four consecutive seasons.

We could map their distribution and understand how they use their marine habitats by monitoring their movements. Our findings revealed that the extensive Antarctic krill fishery, projected to increase further, overlaps with snow petrel wintering areas, highlighting the need to assess its potential impacts on krill-dependent predators.

About Fram Talks: The Fram Centre offers a multi-disciplinary, international, multi-cultural work environment. “Fram Talks” is a monthly venue for exchanging knowledge and learning from each other. These informal events last for 45 minutes and take place in Lysgården at the Fram Centre. We will of course serve light breakfast!
